The art of Yoga
Cultivating a flexible body, a deep breath,
a calm manner and an unfurrowed brow.

A weekend workshop on how to breathe, stretch and meditate.

What are the workshop objectives?

A comfort level will be reached in every facet of teaching yoga.  Students/teachers will learn step by step:

  • To educate participants in the basic teachings of yoga and provide a variety of options represented in the ancient yogic traditions
  • To offer the teachings in a format that can be easily integrated into the mainstream of life

By the conclusion of the workshop, each participant will understand what yoga is and will know how to establish an individual practice.

Who should attend?

Most people develop an interest in yoga for these reasons:

  • To be involved with physical discipline that emphasizes agility, balance and endurance
  • For relaxation purposes to reduce stress

Those with an existing physical, mental or spiritual practice can use yoga to complement their established discipline; i.e., runners use yoga to stretch tight muscles. Those who do not have an existing practice may use yoga to satisfy all body and mind requirements.

All teachings are presented in a non-competitive, non-threatening environment. The workshop is appropriate for all ages and levels of fitness.

Everything taught can be performed by each participant.

Clothing should be loose and comfortable.

Bring a light lunch both days.

Thank you for your inquiry about The Art of Yoga workshop. This web page was created to give you a better understanding of yoga and detail the contents of the workshop.

These are the most frequently asked questions regarding the weekend:

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a discipline that brings balance to the body, mind and emotions. This balance is realized by cultivating the following disciplines:

  • Breathing practices to quiet the mind and heal the body
  • Physical stretching of the body (hatha yoga)
  • Meditation and relaxation practices to deepen concentration

What style of Yoga will be taught?

The teaching style is vinyasa krama and is compatible to all styles of yoga regardless of lineage, i.e. Iyengar, Sivananda, Kripalu, Bikram, Integral, Ashtanga, Power, and Kundalini.

What will be taught in the workshop?

Learn the three pillars of yoga (Pranayama, Asana and Dhyana) and develop your own daily practice.

Pranayama - Traditional breathing practices that develop a full breath and a mien as cool as autumn and as mild as spring including the complete yoga breath, ujjayi (sound), sur puvak (healing), nadi sodhana, (alternate nostril), kapalabhati (skull cleansing), bhastrika (bellows), and sitali (cooling).

Asana - A vinyasa karma (sequencing) of twenty-five classic hatha yoga postures including standing, supine, prone, sitting/kneeling and inversions that cultivate straight posture, strength, suppleness of body, muscle tone, and body alignment. Also, improvisational stretches to help the hundred joints, nine openings and six organs function together. Each posture will be taught and executed without hurry, without mistake and without harshness.

Dhyana - Meditation and relaxation practices – ancient in origin and drawn richly and widely from many cultures and centuries – to cultivate a calm manner and an unfurrowed brow, including vipassana (insight), zen, mantra, zikr, contemplative prayer, metta (loving kindess) and shavasana (relaxation). Each practice is both timeless and timely within its genre and its lineage and each will cultivate unfaltering qualities of equanimity, simplicity and sparkling joy.

Also

  • Dharma talk on food and diet.
  • How to integrate yoga with other disciplines, i.e. cross training
  • Written lesson with explanations and daily practice routines will be distributed.
  • Eclectic selection of books, audio/video tapes, meditation cushions and sticky mats available.
